چکیده

We present a refinement and coarsening algorithm for the adaptive representation of Right-Triangulated Irregular Network (RTIN) meshes. The refinement algorithm is very simple and proceeds uniformly or locally in triangle meshes. The coarsening algorithm decreases mesh complexity by reducing unnecessary data points in the mesh after a given error criterion is applied. We describe the most important features of the algorithms and give a brief numerical study on the propagation associated with the adaptive scheme used for the refinement algorithm. We also present a comparison with a commercial tool for mesh simplification, Rational Reducer, showing that our coarsening algorithm offers better results in terms of accuracy of the generated meshes. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Terrain Representation using Right-Triangulated Irregular Networks

A quadtree-based triangulation, sometimes called an RTIN, is a common hierarchical representation of terrain for 3D visualization. In this paper we focus on the memory/error bound trade-offs for using RTINs with planar and quadratic surface patches over triangles.

Adaptive terrain rendering with smooth subdivision surfaces on the GPU

This bachelor thesis presents two new methods for effective parallel terrain rendering. First, a new parallel adaptive terrain rendering method on the GPU, named “Parallel adaptive refinement” (PAR), is presented. The method generates view-dependent meshes consisting entirely of right-isosceles triangles. In a top-down refinement, a coarse input mesh is refined directly in the rendering pipelin...

On-the-Fly Adaptive Subdivision Terrain

In this paper we present a method to achieve interactive rendering of smooth terrain based on coarse data. Therefore we use adaptive subdivision surfaces which are calculated on the fly by using information from the directed edge based mesh of the previously rendered frame and throwing away triangles not used any longer. This way we are able to gain fast, high quality meshes which are refined d...

Terrain Decimation through Quadtree Morphing

We present a new terrain decimation technique called a Quadtree Morph, or Q-morph. The new approach eliminates the usual popping artifacts associated with polygon reduction, replacing them with less objectionable smooth morphing. We show that Q-morphing is fast enough to create a view-dependent terrain model for each frame in an interactive environment. In contrast to most Geomorph algorithms, ...

Evaluation of Real-Time Continuous Terrain Level of Detail Algorithms

In the world of 3D graphics many applications require the ability to render large 3D terrains in an efficient manner. To satisfy this need, algorithms have been devised that render height fields using a real-time continuous level of detail technique. Instead of drawing each of the many triangles that can make up a terrain, this technique renders the terrain with a highly reduced number of polyg...
